Capture Your 365 Blog Hop

Today, a number of the photographers who are participating in the Capture Your 365 project are taking part in a Blog Hop! When you get to the bottom of my post, you’ll see the list of everyone that is participating, so you can take a stroll through the whole list and see what other people are doing with this project.

In preparation for my post, I spent a goodly portion of my Sunday afternoon getting caught up on sorting out photos and uploading them to various places. I was supposed to be doing taxes, but this is much more fun, as you can well imagine.

It’s a little hard to believe that we have already reached the beginning of April. I’m really proud of myself for keeping up with this project. Credit for that goes to two things: one, is participating in the community at Capture Your 365 — I’m learning a lot from the site, plus it helps to get such great feedback from everyone on my pictures, as well as to see glimpses of other people’s lives. I keep seeing beaches and it makes me jealous…

The other reason for success is the “rules” or lack thereof…that I’ve established for this project.

DO

…try to take a picture every day.
…try to tell a story about my family and our lives with each picture.
…try to learn more about my camera.
…try to use the inspiration prompts from Katrina at Capture Your 365

DON’T

…worry if I don’t take a photo every day.
…worry if none of the pictures are technically perfect, they still tell a story.
…worry if I never use any of the inspiration prompts.

Is this thing on?

Whoa. It’s like the entire month of March didn’t exist as far as the ole blog is concerned. Let’s see…I was sick, I went on vacation, school is ridiculously busy…Cocoa ran in to Mark’s truck…

(Luckily, she seems to be recovering just fine…dumb dog…)

And now it’s April. A.P.R.I.L. As of Friday, the seniors had just 34 more days of school, which means that I have to figure out how to finish planning for graduation (holy buckets!)

Joe in Black and White

Today’s photo is of Joe (well, and of Will too, but he’s all blurry in the background…)

He’s a pretty good looking kid, isn’t he? I was amazed that he let me take his picture, and he just looked at me…sort of…naturally! No goofy faces, no cheesy smiles, no frowns…

This isn’t where the picture started, though. Straight out of camera it looked like this:

I was resting the camera on the back of the couch, and didn’t realize that the couch cushion was in the way.

I cropped it, and this is better:

But the color is obviously off, those blinds in the back are WHITE, not yellow!

So, we click on the trusty eyedropper in Adobe Lightroom and voila:

Well, crap. The color is “correct” — but now Joe’s face is BLUE — thanks to the fact that he is actually being lit by his computer laptop screen. Now, if the screen were in the shot, I might be inclined to go with it, since it would tell a story about Joe being at his computer, etc, but since you can’t see the computer…he just looks…wrong…

So: time to play with the black and white conversion. This is definitely a subjective process, but I’m pretty happy with how this looks:

Like I said: good-looking kid! And there’s another one just like him. (Sort of…LOL)

I see the moon

The moon is full, the sky is clear, and I was bound and determined to get a shot that showed off the detail of the moon.

50 pictures and several frozen fingers later (and a trip to Mr. Google to tell me what settings I really needed to get a good shot…) and voila:
