I voted early this morning, I was number 68 at my polling place. Mark was #700-and something. Best part of election day around here (besides the cessation of campaigning…) is the Methodist Church’s chicken and biscuit supper. Yum.
I have opted to NOT turn on the TV, because I don’t really need to spend hours listening to people talk about how they don’t really know anything. I am enjoying watching the maps on the various websites update as results start to trickle in.
My plans for this evening’s blog post were thwarted today by the fact that my brand-new book by my favorite author didn’t actually show up, like I thought it was going to. I was going to ahve a whole post with pictures of me opening the box, and lovingly turning the pages.
OK, not really, but I was hoping to write about it. The book is “Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance” by Lois McMaster Bujold. She is the only author that I will buy in hardcover these days, sight unseen. In fact, I preordered this back in APRIL. That is a long time to wait, especially since the electronic advanced reader’s copy has been available on her publisher’s website for months. I have assiduously avoided all potential spoilers. No sample chapters, I’ve stayed away from the e-mail list that discusses her books, I haven’t even looked at reviews.
LMB’s books have reached comfort food status with me: I will pick one up to reread a certain section, and the next thing I know, I’ve read for an hour…
I’m going to have to be careful not to just gulp the book down in one big swallow: this is going to sound weird, but it’s kind of sad not to be able to read her books for the first time more than once. Sure, you can reread, and find new layers and turns of phrases and what-no, but that first exploration of the story is over once.
Maybe it’s better that it won’t get here until Friday. That way I can stay up all night reading and sleep all day Saturday….
