I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me to go looking for this video clip sooner.
My small town made the CBS Evening News last Friday night.
Did any of you see it? About the little Iowa town that is building a museum to house a salt and pepper shaker collection?
Yup, that’s where I live.
Here’s a link to the video clip:
The collection is owned by an 80 year old woman who’s been collecting them for something like 60 years. I think there are 25,000 pieces in the collection.
When the Museum is built, will some of you come visit me?
I’m not going to tell you what I think about it, but I’d be interested to hear what some of you think.

OMG, that is so funny! I’ll come if I can ride on the combine too.

Well, we have a Pez museum here so I don’t know as I can say anything disparaging about a salt and pepper shaker museum 🙂 I suspect it takes a lot of seasoning when you make something in that big frying pan. I dunno about paying for the collection and building a new building for it though.

Honestly, I think it’s great! It is what makes visiting different towns interesting and fun. If you just drive the highways all you see is the same thing you find in your own towns. Walmart, HomeDepot and McDonalds. You might as well stay home. We LOVE the historical sites, locally owned shops and kitchy museums. It’s our favorite part of traveling.

Unique and delightful! I wouldn’t make a special trip half way across the country to see it, but I would definitely stop if I were coming your way for another reason.

Well darn, we got lots of strange museums here. Like distillery, pottery, and baseball bats….but I’d rather see the S&P collection. I would visit if I was headed that way.

North Carolina taxpayers are helping to finance a teapot museum in Sparta, NC, near our mountain cabin. I’ll visit yours if you’ll visit mine…

The museum is kind of a neat idea. The guy who did that CBS piece seemed pretty arrogant. He didn’t seem to think Iowans were worth anything. I guess those east coast effettes can stay out of the MidWest. We don’t want ’em. The Waterloo Courier did a much better job with that story.
