Crossed off the list

A Covered Lampshade!  Having said something on the ole blog, I figured I’d better follow through:

My sister-in-law had gotten 3 different beaded trims to try out, and I couldn’t remember which one Lucy and I had decided on, so after glueing on the fabric, I had Lucy come over to help wtih the beaded trim.

They are going to be spraypainting an older lampbase orange (I think it’s currently pink), and then Lucy will have a custom light fixture to match the quilt I made her.  I’d forgotten that I also made pillowcases for her.  That was back in October 2007, but I’m pretty sure it’s only been since Summer 2008 that I’ve been sitting on the lampshade.

After finishing Joe’s creature, which I suspect has been sitting around longer than the lampshade…Will demanded that I make something for him.  Luckily for me, the drawing he made me was pretty simple, and I was able to tackle it quite easily:

I quilted the body fabric before cutting it out just to give it some additional texture, since Mr. Ghost is quite plain.  Will did most of the stuffing, and I finished it up with some hand-sewing this afternoon.  I forgot to show it to him earlier, and was going to sneak it into his bed, but…he was still awake when I took it in.  His big grin was worth the effort.

Elephant butt

My wool felt is all at the shop so I had to wait until yesterday to do her eyes.

I can’t decide if I need to keep her for myself for a few weeks before hand delivering her to Hannah, or if I should stick her in the mail right away.

Since it’s fresh in my head and the pattern pieces are still strewn about, I may have to make a second one right away for Darren, the littlest member of our family.

Have a great day!

p.s.  The winner of the 4.5 by 4.5 ruler was Jackie, Jackie I sent you an e-mail!  There were only THREE jokes or puns in the comments.  My favorite was the envelope/stationery pun, and we did enjoy the noisy oyster tongue-twister, but not surprisingly, the bodily function joke was the one that my almost-10-year-old judges liked best, so Angela will also be getting a ruler.

Joe’s Creature

I showed the Pink Paisley Elephant to the boys last night, and as you can suspect, they were polite, but ultimately unimpressed.

Joe didn’t SAY anything, but my MommyGuilt kicked in and I could HEAR the accusation that was on the tip of his tongue after he asked how long it took me to make the elephant.

It goes something like this:

You can make a Pink Paisley Elephant from scratch in 3 hours, but you can’t finish the softie creature you started making me  YEARS ago?

I’m embarrassed to admit that finishing Joe’s Creature took approximately 20 minutes.  If that.  All it needed was to have the stuffing hole handstitched closed, and the eyes and mouth sewn on.

Joe originally wanted yellow buttons for eyes, but I talked him into the red felt circles.

Joe drew the creature for me.  I simplified it and turned it into this crazy thing.  The head is dotted minkee, the body is green fleece and the appendages are a red flannel.

I’m not sure if it has a name, if it does, I’ll let you know.

And now, I’m feeling my AuntieGuilt kicking in:  I need to finish covering the lampshade that matches Lucy’s quilt.  We were going to do it together, but the weather wasn’t right (I wanted to spray the adhesive outside…) and it’s been sitting ever since.  A year maybe?  Sheesh.  Another project I’ll probably be done with in 30 minutes, tops.

Off on a Tangent

Today I made cookies (from scratch) for the guys working on our house.

dsc00927 Off on a Tangent

The last time I made cookies from scratch, was two years ago when they were working on the west side of the house.  In between, we’ve been making cookies from frozen cookies dough.  How pathetic is that?

Between the two of them, another helper, and maybe Wade’s girlfriend, the 2 dozen cookies I took out this morning disappeared…

I’m so very glad to see this siding go up, it’s looking just great.

The two young men working on the house aren’t bad-looking either.

Holy Zeus, it makes me feel old just to know I even thought something like that…

Today I also made further progress on the background fill on this customer quilt:

It’s getting there.   A little more background fill and then 3 borders…it’s a big quilt, but I hope I can get it done tomorrow.

And tonight?

Tonight, I went off on a tangent.  An elephant tangent.

dsc00959 Off on a Tangent

This morning, when I was reading blogs, I saw the cutest stuffed elephant on one of the blogs I read (While She Naps, links to the elephant post, but the whole blog is worth perusing, she makes some incredible birds, and other creatures).  Ever since, I’ve had this urge to make a stuffed elephant.

I know, I know, I know.

Don’t think I can’t hear you saying “Sweet biscuits and gravy, that Suzanne is crazy as a loon.”

So, I went searching the Internet for free elephant patterns, though I don’t know how I thought I was going to use anything, since my printers are all at the shop.  I didn’t find much until I stumbled across a review of the elephant pattern in the book Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts by Joelle Halvorson, a book I happen to OWN!!  And I was able to actually find it right away, too!

The elephant was designed by Hillary Lang of Wee Wonderfuls, another really great blog I read on a regular basis. (I used her Pointy Kitty pattern awhile back).

My elephant is missing eyes and I think I need to redo her ears, they are a bit lopsided…

She’s made out of leftovers from a quilt I made for my niece, (which I cannot find on the blog at the moment, grrr…), so Miss Elephant will probably go live with her matching quilt…but she does need a name first, any ideas?
