Baked goods

As longtime readers will know, if I’m awake, it’s entirely likely that I’m doing something slightly moronic.  Every so often I have flashes of brilliance, but sustaining that is pretty hard for me.

It comes as something of a miracle for me, though, when people around me, who sort of look like they might be perfect, do something…not perfect.

I’m happy to report that MY baked good turned out much better.  Getting the right size needles helped.  That cherry on top is even knit!  I’m so proud of me.  I started looking for more small knitted projects like this, and got sucked in by the Ravelry pattern browser last night.  There’s some funny stuff out there.  I’ll share some of my finds later, but I think supper is calling me.

Too bad we don’t have any fresh bread to eat tonight.

The rest of the cell phone saga

I was mostly laughing on Monday.  Truly, if I cried over everything stupid thing I did, I’d be a snotty mess most of the time.

I was wearing a sweatshirt with a front pouch, and that’s where the phone was at the time of the incident.  I leaned over to flush, and out it slid…  It’s gone but not forgotten, because the toilet is draining, but definitely not flushing properly.  I’m going next door when I need the facilities, and while I did leave a message for my landlord, I haven’t heard back from him yet. (Is it wrong that I’m glad it happened here at the shop, and not at home where it would be Mark’s problem?)

Right away Monday afternoon, I wandered down to the hardware store, that doubles as our wireless store, and cringed in anticipation of how much this fiasco was going to cost me.

See, the phone was nearly new.  Like…November new.  I wasn’t eligible for a new cheap phone, this WAS my new phone.  (Because I had dropped the last one and it wouldn’t stop buzzing…)

Turns out that sometimes I get lucky, though, and did NOT have to pay retail.  The cell company has a 30 day return policy, and they just happened to have the above phone (which is identical to the one that got flushed…) in stock as a returned item.  And, as it turns out, it hadn’t ever actually been programmed, so…it’s like I got a brand-new phone for only $40.  (Full retail was…$160…)

You can be darned sure that I will be extremely careful with my phone around toilets for awhile.

And thanks for laughing at me, I’m glad I could provide some entertainment in your day…

If I had a brain…

I’d be seriously dangerous.  Yes, it was one of THOSE days today.  I probably shouldn’t have even attempted to drive my car or run the quilting machine, but I managed to do both of those things just fine.  The problem is all of the little stuff that makes me crazy.

Mark asked me to do 2 things for him.  Print a report and write a check.  About 10 minutes after I’d gotten downtown this afternoon, the phone rings.  I had forgotten to do BOTH.  SO…Mom kindly let me run home while she kept watching the shop (tough job, I don’t think anyone came in…), as long as I took her coat with me, so Mark could look at the zipper.

I was nearly out the door (not 30 seconds later, after promising to do so…) when she says “The coat?”

I’d almost forgotten it.

There were other examples, but…I’m so brainless I can’t remember what they were. Oh, one of them was that I couldn’t actually print the report right when he wanted it, because I had done something stupid when I entered some transactions, so I had to fix that brainless mistake…

I did manage to make some pretty feathers though:

I also worked on moving some stuff out of my sewing room, so that Mark could begin some deconstruction.  After my second trip down the stairs, I suddenly thought to myself:

“HELLO???  THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE CHILDREN.”

And then I made the boys carry the rest of the boxes downstairs.

I was going to sew or do some more straightening up and packing, but I got distracted by a big wad of yarn in my yarn drawer.  It was pretty nasty:  a whole bunch of yarn that had gotten all tangled together.  I dominated it, though…there may have been some cheating by way of cutting some of the yarn free…but still…I cleaned that mess up.  I also found a scarf that I had started knitting….more than 2 years ago.  The scarf was plenty long enough to wear, so I took a few minutes to go ahead and a bind it off.  Now, I’ll probably stick it back in the drawer, because a whole bunch of ends need to be sewn in, and that sounds like too much work.

I think I’ve finally managed to finish the things that Mark asked me to do…so I’d better get to bed before I hurt myself.

I have a problem

DSC02353 I have a problemI have something that I call the Terrible Package Sender gene.  (It only affects packages to friends and families.  Customer packages are generally OK, except when the Blonde gene kicks in and I do something stupid, like pile things on top of a customer order.  But that’s only happened once. )

Hopefully, by now, my friends and family have realized it is nothing personal. It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s just that I can start gathering up stuff for a package and it’ll be 2 years later and the stuff is still sitting there before I decide that I probably ought to finally send the package.  You know, before the t-shirts for my niece and nephew no longer fit.

(Well, the t-shirts haven’t been sitting there that long, but some of the other stuff has been).

Or I’ll start making a quilt for a new nephew and I’ll get it almost all the way done, and then I’ll let it sit, waiting for a label for months. Because you know that label is going to take all of 20 minutes, and I just can’t find 20 minutes anywhere. (<—that’s a joke.)

Well, last week I decided it was time to try to overcome my genetics, and not use them as an excuse anymore.  I got in gear and made a quilt for my new niece-to-be, made labels for both the new quilt and the old quilt that’s been waiting, plus pillowcases, and made a promise to myself that everything would be in the mail TODAY.

Go me.

David and Stefanie?  There was so much, I ended up needing to use 2 boxes.  They’ll go to the post office this afternoon.
