Minkee backed strap cover

dsc09206 Minkee backed strap cover

I’ve only ever used Minkee for the backs of quilts, never really sewn with it.

It’s really kind of a pain in the neck, all that stretchy-stretchy.  Except the final result WON”T be a pain in the neck, it’ll be so nice and soft, right?

I think I made this one a little too wide, and I think I would like it better if I made it such that the cotton side was a bit bigger than the Minkee side, so that  the Minkee didn’t roll to the other side.

I wondered how long it would take my sister to put in her order.  I was actually looking at some black and white stripe fabric I have — that would probably look pretty cool with the red Minkee (the only color of Minkee I hvae at the moment…) and not be too girly…

It’s unintentional, but a bit funny that both this one and the previous one are fruit related fabric.  I was going to say cherries and strawberries are all I have, but I think I’m wrong — I have a stack of fat quarters from that Sock monkey colleciton — I think there are some bananas in that stack…

I took a 2 hour nap this afternoon, which of course means that I’m wide awake now.I sholud probablygo to bed, but I think I’ll go sew some more.  Though, I’m done making camera strap covers for tonight.

My photography class starts tomorrow, and in preparation I’ve been gathering some things — I did end up ordering a new-to-me lens from eBay.  And I bought something really geeky at Sam’s Club last night (An external hard drive — ONE TERABYTE.)  I’ve also ordered something to use at the shop to help me take better pictures of yarn and stuff, but that won’t arrive until tomorrow (I hope), and really isn’t for the class.  And I dug out my camera strap.

Every so often I’ve seen posts on various scrapbooking blogs about custom camera straps, and I think “Wow, that’s fun”  and then I forget about it.

Lately, though, I’ve wondered about actually USING my camera strap, so when I dug it out I decided that I definitely needed a prettier strap.

Started looking around some more and found that there were two types out there:

  1. full straps whereby they had replaced the part that had the company name on it with the pretty fabric
  2. slipcovers, which just…slip over the existing strap.

Dudes, I found these for sale for $15 to $25 (or more) depending on whether they were slipcovers or full straps.

I caught myself looking at fabric choices trying to decide which one I wanted when I thought “DUH.  It’s just a tube of fabric with some top-stitching.  Even YOU can handle that.”

I think I spent about 30 minutes.  It could be just a hair wider, and for my *next* one I’m going to try making it with Minkee on one side.  And now I have visions of maybe making a custom camera case (because mine is plain black and not quite big enough, especially for extra lenses…).  We’ll see how that goes, it won’t be quite as easy as a tube of fabric with top-stitching.

Mark was not impressed.  Well, he was, but he has decided he won’t want to use my camera if the strap is attached.

And here I thought he was more secure in his masculinity.
