An Earl(e)y Christmas

Yesterday, we pawned the boys off on my in-laws and set off for the big city for some serious Christmas shopping.  Us and everybody else, apparently.

At one point, Mark said something like “Even though we hate it, maybe we should shop in October so we don’t have to do this.”

And I replied “Yes, we tried that one year, and we just KEPT shopping, because we kept finding cool things.”  So this is really cheaper, if fraught with insanity.

When the boys walked into the house last night, Will gave me a big old grin.  You could tell he was looking around, hoping to catch sight of something we might have forgotten to put away.  Little did he know that the very next morning, he’d actually get the opportunity to SEE some of what we bought, because we decided to forget about waiting until Christmas Day, plus Mark wanted to use their gifts today, so:

5150 0910 vice An Earl(e)y ChristmasAll THREE boys got fancy new snowboards and boots.  Mark has been using a board that was too short and narrow for him, and the boys hadn’t had boards of their own since the time we bought some cheap ones and Target and ended up taking them back because they were really terrible.  I’m not sure they could slide more than about a foot at a time on those, so that was pretty much useless.  They loaded up the truck and headed off for the mountains this morning to give those boards a workout.  We kind of figured that if they didn’t go now, we would have an unseasonably warm winter and they’d never get to use them at all.

That means that I have the house to myself, today.  (Well, me and the dogs…) And in between working on binding the Radiant Star (which is almost done!!!), I’m messing around with MY Christmas present.

Prepared to be NOT surprised that I picked one out in Candy Apple Red:

It’s a Fender Sonoran SCE, acoustic/electric.  It is very shiny and much prettier in person.  And when the guy in the guitar store played it, it sounded pretty sweet.

I’m running into a few problems:

1.  I’m a perfectionist, and want to be good RIGHT NOW, not in a few weeks and months after consistent practice.

2.  I’m also a hypocrite, because I teach longarm quilters and am always telling them not to be perfectionists, and that they can’t expect to be good until after they’ve had weeks and months of consistent practice.

3.  As a pianist, I’m going to struggle with finger numbers.  On the piano, finger number 1 is your thumb:  on the guitar, number 1 is your pointer.

4.  Speaking of that pointer.  The one on the left hand. Some blonde dingelhoffer sliced the edge of it off with a rotary cutter a few months ago and it is still QUITE tender.  QUITE. And it’s even MORE tender after trying to learn how to use it on the guitar.  Ouch.  Oh, how I wish I could go whisper in her ear and tell her to be a little more freaking careful with her rotary cutter.

Well, back to work.  I have about 3 feet left of that binding to go.  Y’all are going to be so impressed with it.  The binding, I mean.  Maybe the quilt, too.

Thread Snot

From the front, I couldn’t see it.

But when I was pulling it off the frame, yes, there was a spot of thread snot.

You have my permission to make use of that term.  It’s highly technical, you know.

I should have marked it last night when I first found it, because it took several minutes to re-find it this morning.   I’m not entirely sure where that bit of thread snot came from.  It doesn’t look like a thread shredding incident, and those incidents I usually know about because they make a nasty sound and then eventually the thread breaks.

That nasty spot has now been fixed, the edges are trimmed and this baby is ready for binding.  Only, I can’t decide what to bind it with. I washed some fabric last night, and now that I’m looking at it, I don’t like it.

I was hoping to take some pictures at home this morning, in the good light, but…I got a pretty slow start this morning.  And, there was a 2 hour school delay, so the boys were occupying the space where I usually lay quilts out for photo shoots.

Now that I’m at this point, it’s time to get some other stuff moving.  Having this one done is a huge weight, and suddenly my list of things to do before Christmas seems alot more manageable.

Though, there’s plenty on it, so I’d better get moving.

Radiant Star Part 19: Mostly Done

With approximately 3 squares inches to go, it’s at this point in the entertainment that Murphy usually makes his appearance and causes the bobbin thread to run out:

I’m trickier than Murphy, though — shortly before I got to this point, my tension had gone a little bit strange, so I’d cleaned and oiled and pulled a wad of fluff out from under than bobbin case tension arm and stuck in a fresh, new bobbin.

It was a bit of an anti-climax to finish the quilting today.

(especially because after I pulled it off the frame I found a spot on the back where there was some thread snot that I’ll have to go back and fix).

If the light cooperates I’ll take some pictures tomorrow.

I’m debating about working on the binding tonight — I’m contemplating just basking in the mostly done-ness of it.

Very pink

Well, dang it all to heck, the weather people called it.  We have a blizzard.  Instead of enjoying myself at a fabulous concert in Iowa City, I’m sitting at home pouting.

I’d better quit that if I want Santa to bring me one of these:

I want to learn to play the guitar.  I realized last night that I’ve been playing the piano for almost 30 years.  Yikes.  It’s not very portable, though.

I’m apparently in a very pink mood lately.  I’ve made some more progress on the pink quilt I showed a few days ago, but it doesn’t look much different than it did in that post.

That’s because I got a little bit distracted.  I’m still plugging away during the work day on this:

(Only…10? of the wreaths/partial wreaths to go…)

And dreaming about making a Radiant Star of my own.

My color scheme certainly isn’t original, but I’m giving credit to the fact that I’ve been wearing this lately:

(I love wearing a Supergirl jacket.  I get comments from random strangers in the post office.  It’s awesome.)

The color is really off in this photo.  The block is MUCH prettier than this in real life:

One of those down, but only 8 to go.  I’m not crazy enough to make 20 of them.  At least, not crazy enough to make 20 MORE.

I’ve been mentally thinking of it as “Son of Radiant Star,” but I suppose “daughter” would be more appropriate.

I just wish I were working on something blue, so this whole post could have been about how BLUE I am tonight.

Yes, there were tears.

Yes, we tried to make the drive, but the wind was worse than Mark had experienced just 30 minutes earlier.  We only made it about 6 miles before we turned back.

School is already closed tomorrow, and with the way the wind is whipping around, I may or may not make it out of the house.

I just love Iowa.  And winter.  And snow.

Not.
